Job Description

Introduction: The State of Connecticut, Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all criminal matters in the State of Connecticut. It is an independent agency of the executive branch of state government, established under the Constitution of the State of Connecticut. The Division is composed of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney, located in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, and the Offices of the State's Attorneys for each of the thirteen Judicial Districts in the State of Connecticut.

About this Position: We are recruiting for a full-time DCJ Investigator for the Hartford GA 14 in Hartford, CT. This position works Monday through Friday, based on a 37.5 hour work week, with core hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm. The position # is 5098. The incumbent will be required to complete a background check . The incumbent may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.

This role requires:
  • Excellent computer skills to work with law enforcement agencies in securing and handling digital evidence in the form of photographs, video, 911 calls, body and dashboard cameras.
  • Experience with standard office procedures and computer software programs and applying such experience to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Division of Criminal Justice this class is accountable for assisting in the preparation of criminal and motor vehicle cases for prosecution and trial and for investigating or assisting in the post-arrest investigation of crimes within the jurisdiction of the assigned prosecutorial office.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Screens, reviews, prioritizes and prepares incoming motor vehicle and criminal files;
  • Ensures that all case file information necessary for prosecution is complete;
  • Interviews and takes statements from police, witnesses, and victims;
  • Obtains relevant documentation (e.g. police reports, hospital records, toxicology laboratory reports, etc.);
  • Locates individuals;
  • Prepares case chronology for prosecutor;
  • Prepares necessary reports and may make initial recommendation regarding pretrial diversion;
  • Briefs victims and witnesses prior to court appearances;
  • Responds to inquiries from victims regarding case progress;
  • Serves as liaison with police departments and other state and federal agencies;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience as a law enforcement officer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

A Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related fields may be substituted for the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants with the following experience/training:
  • Experience handling body camera footage and performing light editing via video software
  • Experience in writing arrest and search warrants
  • Experience interacting with the community
  • Effective experience with oral communication
  • Experience with criminal trials
  • Experience using case management systems in detail

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel within the state in the course of their daily work.
